Meet Bear!
We’ve been spending more time with dogs than people lately.. Mike and Thea are on a honeymoon so we’ve been hanging out with Bear!

Bob, Q, Rhea, Trish and Cory, and Will and Nat were in town for the AGU conference.
Zara was so excited to hang out with rock nerds that she was moving at lightning speed… she just couldn’t stay still!

We hadn’t seen each other in years and met up for YUMMMMMY DIM SUM with the Johnsons at Legendary Palace.. pics!

I found this great pic of Zara on top of Bernal hill! Hmmmm.. I wonder who took it :)
Zara’s ears are in full effect, and she’s giving the camera the baroo head tilt. Cuuuuute!!
May reminded me that this pic was taken at the Bernal Kite Fight, which was WAY FUN!
Zara is scared of the ocean waves! The other doggies run in, but Zara stands at the water’s edge and waits for them to swim back..
A few months ago we took her to Mendocino, and Zara had fun playing in the sand!

But then her ball rolled reeealy close to the ocean..

And we gave her some treats when she went close to the calm water…

There were no scary waves at this beach, and our verrry brave puppy put her teeny tiny paw into the ocean for the first time!

Being a brave puppy is so very very hard! Now it’s time for napzzzzzzzzz…..

Aww that is the best dog ever! lol Is he a Black Lab?
Everyone seems to have a different opinion about what kind of dog she is.. Here is what we’ve been told:
- the rescue said lab mix
- the vet said collie mix
- the people who see her wrinkly lips say she’s part shar-pei
- the people who see the spots on her tounge say she’s part chow
- the trainer said she’s part basenji
- we think she is part terrier and 100% cuuuuute!
I guess that’s all that matters!! lol
Soooooo cute!!
wow, you got some nice pics of the planes! and your sis and zara too! :-) (i think it takes less time to load though when you put the pics in a slideshow)
Looks like you guys had a good time and the dog had a GREAT time! lol
Really? I thought the Slide Show was taking forever. I’ll do some side by side tests.
The other thing is the Slide Show uses flash, which uses a lot of CPU in Safari. The images just sit there…
okay, I admit, I’m probably making up the “less time” thing…I guess I think it looks nicer and more compact in a slide show (we designers make up silly stuff like that when we don’t want to admit the real reason for something :-)
Personally, I like the tall “essay” (or however you want to call it) format. Then again, I’m an impatient engineer and I know nothing about design.
For those interested, here’s what I was thinking about when I posted everything as a single image rather than a Slide Show, or a series of separate images:
– In a text file, make a list of the images using local file:/// URLs
– Use search-and-replace to wrap those URLs in a standard IMG tag with width=600 (I should have used 300).
– add a BR tag between each IMG tag
– Open the text file in Safari, all the images are loaded in a vertical strip.
– Discover that if I use Safari to convert this page to PDF, there will be a bunch of page breaks, and there is no way to turn off page breaks
– ( Actually, thinking about it now, I could have gone to Page Setup and defined a custom paper size that is veerrrrrry tall )
– Resort to a custom command line application that converts a WebView to PDF which by totally weird coincidence I had written last weekend for another purpose.
– Open this very tall, continuous “static slide show” in Preview, and save-as JPEG.
– Upload to TikiRobot!
Yes, I know am insane. For whatever reason I find it more enjoyable to generate images programmatically rather than manually cut and paste them, even if it actually takes longer (because of writinig custom software) to do it that way .
I think it’s the big blank expanse of gray that is sort of unsettling to see (as one waits for the download)…whereas with the SlideShow thingy it’s a smaller expanse of gray and you can read other stuff while you wait. Plus you have such nice captions :-)
I taught Zara how to catch a frisbee today.. It only took about twenty minutes. How long do you think it would take to teach her ultimate?
oh that was fast!!! i want a dog! but i think i will have to make do with a kitty cat. (i’m going to get a kitten next month cuz i miss the kitty-cat-kisses :-)
Five things my puppy chewed on this morning while I was still asleep:
Right now she is sleeping soundly, no doubt dreaming about interesting things to chew on tomorrow.. but tomorrow she’ll be staying in her crate until I’m awake!
yikes! i remember when my puppy chewed the linoleum in our kitchen down to the floorboards. i wish i knew about crating back then! eventually i learned to stick peanut butter in one of those long fake bones with a hole in the middle so pup would obsess about trying to get the peanut butter out of the bone instead of chewing on things she wasn’t supposed to.
She’s finally learned to not chew shoes in or near the shoe rack, but she still thinks shoes anywhere else in the house are chew toys. I wish we could teach her how to extrapolate.
Zara’s yummy chew toy for Tuesday: she pulled a pear off a low branch on the tree today and gnawed on it for a while. She likes to gnaw on pears more than the apples that fall of the tree. I think part of the reason is because she can reach the pears and pull them off the tree, which is super exciting for her.
Jess and Erica and Zara went hiking around the city yesterday.. Here is a cute picture of Zara on top of Bernal hill:

aww, such a cutie! she looks like she’s smilin for the camera :-) i want a dog!

We’ve been having fun socializing Zara.. Just a few weeks ago she was scared of a lot of people and all other doggies. Now that she has her shots we go to Bernal hill every day, and we’ve gone on adventures to Land’s End with Jesse and Bob, and to Fort Funston with Lisa and Amy. She loves other people and is getting used to other dogs. Our neighbors cut a hole in their fence so their dogs could play with the dogs next door, and we get to take Zara over for doggie play dates. Very fun!
But Zara is still a scaredy puppy, and we a lot more work to do.
Things Zara is scared of:
soo cute! she is a BIG puppy!
She’s not too big.. she’s 5 months old and 15 pounds.. the vet said she would get to 18 pounds, but I’m thinking more like 20-25. She is growing quite a bit, and doesn’t look malnourished anymore, but she is still skinny.
We met 50 new dogs today, and 50 new people, and we climbed Bernal hill at night to watch fireworks and she didn’t freak out at all!
Hi,
Although this video might make me look bad, please remember that I’m a *good* puppy!
Love,
Zara
P.S. Bad shoe! Good puppy!
OMG what a huuuuugggge scary shoe that was! it had to be size 20 or something. good thing you got zara to put it down.

Hi, I’m Zara! I’ve been having a great time playing with Raj and Jess! There are so many bugs to chase and sunbeams to nap in! And let’s not forget all the games! We play fetch, then go for a walk, and finish it off by hiding in raj’s shoe.
We’d have even more fun if raj would buy me this great stuff, which is good for my doggie brain:
And from the SF SPCA reading list:
oooh and there’s also the Big Daddy Floppy Disc! That was my doggie’s favoritest toy. perfect for getting her SUPER tired at the dog park :-)
Thanks for the tip!! I stopped by B&B Pet Suppies and picked up the puppy version.. Zara loves it!! We played lots of fetch today :)
Who’s that puppy??? She’s Zara! We adopted her from Rocket Dog Rescue today! Less blurry pictures coming as soon as she learns to pose for the camera :)
