A guy named Ola in Norway is collecting one million giraffes and he needs them by the end of the year to win a bet. He’s got 824,025 of them so far (probably more by the time I click the “publish” button). The only rule is you can’t use a computer to make your giraffe(s). Here’s a video of him explaining why he wants a million of them. Anyways, I just sent him these two!

I read about another Banksy piece being painted over today. It’s unreal that graffiti removal crews will paint over pieces worth more than US $500,000, and then keep on doing it. Here’s a small list.. I’m sure there are ton more that have been painted over:

• February 2007: “Workers from Network Rail painted over a set of doors to an electricity generator on which the secretive artist had sprayed a monkey preparing to blow up a bunch of bananas.”
• April 2007: “Transport workers in London have painted over a mural by world-renowned graffiti artist Banksy, erasing a piece of art estimated to be worth $500,000 (250,000 pounds).”
• March 2007: “A group of bungling council workers have painted over one of the earliest surviving murals by guerrilla graffiti artist Banksy.
  The 25ft x 4ft design, thought to be worth more than £100,000, was mistaken as vandalism by workmen who slapped thick black paint over it.”
• February 2008: “The famous maid stencil by Banksy is in a parlous state. Someone has painted over most of the image, and stenciled the words ‘all the best’ over the top.”
• September 2008: “The painting of a child flying a refrigerator-shaped kite by fabled British graffiti artist Banksy on St. Claude Ave. near St. Anthony St. has been painted over.”
• March 2009: “As of very recently, Banksy’s “One Nation Under CCTV” image in Westminister has been painted over with a single coat of very grey paint.”
• July 2009: “I’ve seen this one in the flesh. Its in the suburbs of Bamako in Mali, West Africa. Banksy was there about 4-5 months ago. Sadly this has been partially painted over.”
• September 2009: “Council officials have painted over a Banksy graffito sketch from which a reworked version was derived as the cover artwork for the 2003 single Crazy Beat by the band Blur.”

This is a cute illustration by Alex Noriega. I don’t know if TikiRobot and this robot would be compatible as friends, since TikiRobot is likely to be making mai-tais or tossing frisbees to dogs instead of eating people…but maybe he wouldn’t mind break-dancing.

I have to admit, I rarely, if ever, play online games (or computer games of any sort). But lately, I’ve been addicted to this game called Draw My Thing which is basically online, multiplayer Pictionary. It’s so much fun! It’s one of many games that’s part of i’m in like with you. Back in September 2006, after reading this post, I sent in an SASE and a phrase for Exploding Dog’s ‘Drawings by Mail.’ May got hers last January but mine never showed up. In the meantime, Sam (of Exploding Dog) had a baby and I figured he’d (understandably) stopped the drawings. But last month they started appearing on the website again. Well, yesterday I spied a large envelope addressed to myself in my own handwriting and for a second, I was confused but then it hit me. It’s HERE! And here it is. PS. May, you never told us what your phrase was.

A choose your own adventure story, told in graffiti:

The mission stencil story is an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure story that takes place on the sidewalks of the Mission district in San Francisco. It is told in a new medium of storytelling that uses spraypainted stencils connected to each other by arrows. The streetscape is used as sort of an illustration to accompany each piece of text.

Its a love story with 2 characters who start in different locations. His story starts at 16th and Valencia, in front of the Crown Hotel / Limon Restaurant with the text “He Leaves his Lonely Apartment.” Her story starts at 21st and Guerrero in front of a stunning mansion with the text, “She Leaves her Lonely Apartment.” Eventually their paths merge, at the point where they meet, and their paths travel together until drama pulls them apart.

For a friend’s birthday yesterday, we went to see The Marvel of Manga at the Asian Art Museum. The exhibit features the work of Osamu Tezuka, who created characters like Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion and is also known as the father of manga. An interesting thing about Tezuka is that he had no official art training but actually graduated from Osaka University with a medical degree. The breadth of his work is amazing and it’s worth checking out. The exhibit runs through Sept 9th and the museum is free on the first Tuesdays of the month.

Here is how I chose a new cell phone. I ran all the cell phones through this flow chart, and added up the scores. The BlackBerry 8703e on Verizon came up on top, but only because the 8800 isn’t out for another two weeks. I have a pretty specific set of requirements, so this probably won’t be useful to you, but here it is anyway:

Here are a few things I forgot to add to the chart (the BlackBerry 8703e has none of these):

• Trackball/D-pad
• Camera
• Touchscreen
• Transflective display
  

Also, that blurry box at the bottom says “USB tethered DUN”..

Adam Koford is a cartoonist who runs the distributed E-Hobo effort that illustrated the 800 hobo names from John Hodgman’s Areas of My Expertise. He was also selling custom-painted postcards illustrating your own hobo name, and Mikey commissioned a drawing of TikiRobot Raj and his Superdog Zara!

Mikey gave me the art-card yesterday at the Ranch and it totally blew me away! So beautiful and perfect! I love the way Adam captured Zara’s Z-tag, and floppy ears, and my flaming head! Thanks much to both of you!

I got sick of our SecureImage captcha. I couldn’t type in the correct code a third of the time, and it looked ugly. So I wrote a new hacked up our existing captcha plugin to show pictures of graffiti and street art instead of computer-generated text!

Please help me test it out by leaving a comment with a link to a picture of street art. I found some great ones in this Flickr set by Trois Tetes. You can also use Flickr Creative Commons search to “find content to modify, adapt, or build upon”. Please make sure that the image has a CC license!

I’ll add attribution for the images and then post the code if no one finds a bug!

A while ago I sent a caption to Sam Brown of exploding dog and today I got a drawing from him in the mail (he was doing an experiment which I posted about over here). The drawing fits my caption perfectly, which I am a little embarrassed to divulge right now. Maybe I’ll tell you later when I’m feeling less embarrassed.

Make apple crisp of course. Tom Dickson demonstrates much better on his ipod below (though i think he’s blending up a smoothie).

I tried this recipe today and it was good, but the “crisp” was not as crispy as I would have liked. Anyone got tips on how to make the “crisp” part extra-crispy???

We played Telephone Pictionary last night, where you write down a sentence on a piece of paper and then pass the paper to someone else who draws a picture of your sentence. That person folds the paper over so the sentence is hidden and then passes the paper to someone else who has to come up with a sentence of the drawing. The round keeps going until everyone has either written a sentence or drawn a picture. It gets ridiculous pretty fast. I have no idea how we ended up with sharky here:

When I was at Giant Robot last Saturday, I picked up this adorable book called The Little Book of Hindu Deities: From the Goddess of Wealth to the Sacred Cow. It’s the kind of book that makes me want to learn about all the deities. If only my math books were this gorgeous when I was in school, I’d be a genius (okay, maybe not…nonetheless, i wish all books were this beautiful). I remember meeting the author at APE a few years ago and seeing the illustrations before the book was out, so was really happy to finally find a copy.

He’s also got a website called GheeHappy where he sells super cute prints and tshirts too!

Kate Bingaman, a professor of Graphic Design at mississipi state university, draws pictures of the things she buys every day and posts them on Obsessive Consumption. Dorothy Gambrell, who draws Cat and Girl (my fave comic), draws comics of how she spends the donations that people send her, and posts them at Donation Derby.

People send pictures of the views outside their windows to Kirsty, and she posts them at The View From Your Window. People send in their anonymous secrets on homemade postcards to Frank Warren, and he posts them on PostSecret.

I find these kinds of sites facinating. My current favorite is brownpeople. No commentaries, no biographies, just pictures of brown people.. All macaca all the time :)

Remember that silly Vox ad with the hipster? Well, it turns out that the hipster in that ad was wearing a Appley Rotten T-shirt! I would totatlly get one of these but they only come in girly tees, which I probably couldn’t squeeze into..
