Exploding Dog Drawing by Mail … FINALLY!

Back in September 2006, after reading this post, I sent in an SASE and a phrase for Exploding Dog’s ‘Drawings by Mail.’ May got hers last January but mine never showed up. In the meantime, Sam (of Exploding Dog) had a baby and I figured he’d (understandably) stopped the drawings. But last month they started appearing on the website again. Well, yesterday I spied a large envelope addressed to myself in my own handwriting and for a second, I was confused but then it hit me. It’s HERE! And here it is. PS. May, you never told us what your phrase was.

Let\'s Find Each Other

SF Prop J: ZOMG WIFI EATS BABIES!!!!11!!!

After the Earthlink/Google deal fell apart, Mayor Newsom took the matter of free city-wide WiFi directly to the people with Proposition J. The Opponents of J bring up several great reasons why Prop J isn’t the best idea. From the voter guide:

  • Why should San Francisco turn over its public infrastructure to private corporations for their profit at our expense?
  • Proposition J does not restrict a vendor like Google from monitoring users’ web-surfing habits.
  • San Francisco already has a fiber optic network – let’s use and extend that instead.

And then there is this paid argument from David Tornheim:

BEWARE— NOTHING COMES FOR FREE!

Your HEALTH is AT RISK.

Are San Franciscans to be guinea pigs in a “blanket”of radiation?

Independent scientific studies show that radiation at the levels proposed is associated with increases in these negative health effects:

  • cancer
  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • sleep disturbances / insomnia
  • childhood leukemia
  • nerve damage

The wireless industry funded its own studies saying not to worry, just like tobacco, oil and pesticide companies. Who are you going to trust?

Fiber optic broadband is safer and more reliable.

Vote NO to WiFi radiation.

David Tornheim

Someone should have paid to include this comic by Wellington Grey in the voter guide.

Meanwhile is awesome.. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure style WebComix full of inventors, time travel, Killotrons, and sekrit codes!

The Marvel of Manga

marvelofmanga.jpg

For a friend’s birthday yesterday, we went to see The Marvel of Manga at the Asian Art Museum. The exhibit features the work of Osamu Tezuka, who created characters like Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion and is also known as the father of manga. An interesting thing about Tezuka is that he had no official art training but actually graduated from Osaka University with a medical degree. The breadth of his work is amazing and it’s worth checking out. The exhibit runs through Sept 9th and the museum is free on the first Tuesdays of the month.

APE (and brunch)!

this Saturday!! The Alternative Press Expo is coming to town this weekend so I’m proposing a TikiRobot brunch and then a visit to APE to stock up on independent comix, toys, and prints. Check out the neat stuff i got last year. Oh and we can pay a visit to Julia of the Fart Party and buy her a beer before she takes off for Portland. (or at least buy some comix from her).

What say you guys?

MetaFilter: Louder and Dumber than the YouTube commenters?

XKCD captures the stupidity of YouTube commenters who are quick to shout FAKE:

youtube.png

The thing is, for a site with open membership, YouTube comments are pretty damn good. Check out this video of our friend, a genius film director, on YouTube:

Check the comments at YouTube, and then go read the MetaFilter comments about this video. MetaFilter is supposedly a community of 20,000 of the smartest people you know. Bob even jumped in the thread and tried to correct people who were shouting FAKE!

Looks staged, but I’ve got no audio at work.

This has done the rounds before – and IIRC, it’s staged.

Yup! That’s definitely what’s happening. Look what his cheek is doing while he has his fist to his mouth — definitely filling up with something.

It’s definitely staged. Too poor production value to not be. And no tv show in their right mind would let an unknown in his condition on live television.

Actually, it does look staged. Had me fooled though.

meh. if you’re going to faux vomit on television, try and make it looks real. or exciting.

Eventually BoingBoing linked to the video, which I put online for FFFF, and it killed our server. The clip has been linked from everywhere (MetaFilter, eBaumsworld, fark, VH1) but it took BoingBoing to kill it. I moved the video to InfiniteBandwidthTube.

Anyway, it’s not fake.

List of Lists

Kate Bingaman, a professor of Graphic Design at mississipi state university, draws pictures of the things she buys every day and posts them on Obsessive Consumption. Dorothy Gambrell, who draws Cat and Girl (my fave comic), draws comics of how she spends the donations that people send her, and posts them at Donation Derby.

People send pictures of the views outside their windows to Kirsty, and she posts them at The View From Your Window. People send in their anonymous secrets on homemade postcards to Frank Warren, and he posts them on PostSecret.

I find these kinds of sites facinating. My current favorite is brownpeople. No commentaries, no biographies, just pictures of brown people.. All macaca all the time :)

Three Nerdy Things

1. The Pineapple Cannon will succeed where other fruit+gadget combinations fail, and it’s Tiki 2.0 compliant!

2. I LOLed! I always lol at xkcd :)

3. Is typing www.getfirefox.com too many letters to deal with when all you want to do is install a web browser that only half-sucks? Try typing www.ie7.com instead.

We Should All Move To Vermont

Wp-Content Uploads 1Fuck For those following along with The Fart Party, our heroine Julia told the jerks at the café to stuff it, and now she’s hanging out in Vermont. Sounds like she’s having a good time.

Doodling in a sketchbook and then taking a picture of it to keep the comic going while traveling … That’s brilliant! Have fun Julia…

if you tell me i can help you…

Next to Andrew Bell, Sam Brown makes my very favorite web doodles. All of his drawings are based on titles that people submit to him…And if you send him a title for a drawing by September 30 (via snail mail), you’ll get an actual drawing back! (via snail mail). Here’s what he says:

from monday october 2st to friday october 6th i will be doing drawings from titles mailed to me. mailed in a truck. i will mail you the drawing back to you. in a truck.

mail me an self addressed stamped envelope, and include a note with the title you want. you must include a title. even it is just a throw away title. please have it arrive my mailbox before september 30th.

i am just trying this out, i am not promising anything. the drawings might be good they might suck.

for the self addressed stamped envelope. you can mail me any size envelope you like as long as there is enough postage to get it back to you.
if you send me an envelope that can hold a 8.5 x 11 inch paper, i can use some cool paper and don’t need to bend or mash it to get it in the mail.

all mail goes to:

Commented!

This xkcd strip cracked me up, although it confused me for a sec because it uses ugly-visual-studio-green instead of subtle-bbedit-gray.

More creatures in my head

We Love Lev …

Linking to Lev because his comics are hilarious and I keep forgetting the URL. Check out the videos! He does this combined comic/DVD thing which I love. Besides breaking into Comedy Central “Jump Cuts” recently he says:

In addition to that though, “Tales” will also be available on the Comedy Central portal for Video Ipod devices later this year. I will be honored if some of you will watch my stuff on the bus coming home from parties, totally drunk at 3 in the morning.

Link to Tales of Mere Existence and lots of other cool stuff.

fartparty

Another good comic without an RSS feed!

ISBN numbers are for sellouts.

A Cat and Girl book!! Cat and Girl is my favorite kind of comic: intellectual, funny, and it sometimes goes over my head.

Creatures In My Head

today isn't working out for me

For all the monsters that ever lived inside your head, Andrew Bell’s got something for you…

Here’s the whole archive of Creatures In My Head.

childhood memories

thingpart

This comic reminds me of the time I was about 3 or 4 and my babysitter asked me if I wanted to go to a party.

“OOOH YEAH!!” I replied “lemme go put on my dress!”

She looked at me sort of funny and then rolled her eyes as if to say, “whatever, kid…you’re weird.”

So I went to my room and put on a fluffy party dress – not sure why I had to go looking like a bon-bon, but I’d been cooped up inside all day so I was super excited and came out all ready for cake, balloons, games, and happy party goodness.

“Are you ready?” my babysitter asked impatiently.
“Yep, all ready.” I said, preening myself.

Then she took me by the hand, walked down the hall, and lead me to the bathroom.

“Tell me when you’re done so I can wipe your butt,” she said.

Apparently, she had asked me if I wanted to go potty.

Combinatoric Critters

critters

Hee, I love love LOVE this! Combinatoric critters is an experiment in generating unique organisms by randomly combining sets of different attributes (from a set of pre-rendered graphics). The result? a whole town of utterly charming and whimsical loopy-heads!

If you click on the interactive illustration it generates a random individual, so I took the liberty of picking some out for us. Can you guess which one is you?
