The Perseids Meteor Shower, which happens every year, is set to peak tonight (between midnight and dawn). The best way to see the showers is to find someplace dark (away from city lights) and lie on your back with your feet pointing northeast. I did this one year somewhere in Marin and saw lots of shooting stars!

Stefan Sagmeister, one of my favorite print designers, is going to be giving a talk at Stanford tomorrow. It’ll be in Pigott Hall (Bldg 260, Room 113) at 8pm. Here’s more on him
Stefan Sagmeister is one of the most influential graphic designers in the world working today. Since 1993 Sagmeister Inc., has focused on all things printed, including posters, brochures, books, and graphics and packaging for music clients…He’s created iconic album covers for Lou Reed, the Talking Heads, and the Rolling Stones…
Also, here’s a talk that he did at TED in 2004 that I recently watched while on the train. It’s called “Yes, design can make you happy.” I don’t know if design always makes me happy but this talk definitely did!

This year’s Burnal Equinox event (called Whispered Dream) is going to be held at the Whisper Ultralounge, which sounds like one of the worst venues in SF for a burning man event.
Their webpage lists the “upscale dress code” as follows:
NO; Athletic/Sports Attire of any kind including expensive designer court shoes, Timberland and/or similar style Boots, Excessively Baggy Jeans, Dark Sunglasses, T-shirts, Athletic Apparel, and Most Hats (Fedora style top hats are acceptable). You’ll have to step it up if you wana step in.
Bwahahahaha… BM keeps getting less and less interesting to me.

So…I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that I’ve spent untold hours watching all manner of people and cartoon characters doing the Soulja Boy dance on YouTube…but not so embarrassed that I’m not gonna post them all here. This one’s my favorite!
For those who aren’t required to immerse themselves in Top 40 music for work, Soulja Boy’s song has been #1 on Billboard for the last 3 months and counting. Yes, I’m embarrassed that I know this stuff…but whatever, I remember hearing it before he got signed and thinking, OMG this song sucks donkey balls. Obviously, I’m an idiot. Of course, everyone now knows that it was his brilliant instructional dance video that separated his from all other donkey balls songs out there…because it spawned such fabulous renditions like the Soulja Boy…
you get the idea…
Anyways, this is just my roundabout way of saying that The San Francisco Hip Hop Dancefest is happening next month, and I think we should go!

Last night, my friend Margot had an extra ticket to this show and asked me to come along. I had no idea what it was about (except for some vague notion that puppets were involved). It was the BEST SHOW I’ve seen all year!
It looks like it’s only playing through Sep 2nd at the Orpheum though, so hurry and see it if you can.

The King of Kong: A Fistfull of Quarters starts playing in SF on Friday at the Lumiere. It’s a documentary about Donkey Kong nerds. I love Donkey Kong and I love documentaries about nerds! When should we go see this??? It’s playing for a week… (via BB)

Conceived by Brian Eno as “visual music”, his latest artwork, 77 Million Paintings is a constantly evolving sound and imagescape which continues his exploration into light as an artist’s medium and the aesthetic possibilities of “generative software”.
This exhibition is happening next weekend at the Yerba Buena Center and it’s only going to be up for 3 nights (actually only 2 nights for the general public). Let’s go! I loved reading his published journal A Year of Swollen Appendices so I’m curious. (I posted some snippets from the book last year over here).

My friend Mark’s boyfriend is starring in a musical called Colma and it opens at the Embarcadero on the 22nd! (yep that would be Colma right off the 280, home of the Serramonte Target, among other fine establishments). He also wrote the score and screenplay.
To be honest, Colma in real life scares me…so I can only imagine the musical to be utterly terrifying. here are some glowing reviews and a link to the trailer!

If you haven’t heard, Dodger and Paul Addis and Carolyn Anhalt produced a one-man play about Hunter S. Thompson called GONZO: A Brutal Chrysalis. 10 Zen Monkeys has a good interview with Paul and R.U. Sirius, which I saw linked off BoingBoing!
They’ve already performed in SF and Portland, and next up is several shows in Seattle. You should go! I should go too!

this Saturday!! The Alternative Press Expo is coming to town this weekend so I’m proposing a TikiRobot brunch and then a visit to APE to stock up on independent comix, toys, and prints. My favorite street fair in San Francisco has been denied its permits for 2007 :(
The How Weird Street Faire was denied its permits on Thursday Feb. 8th because of the emotional opposition of a few neighbors. We are appealing the decision, and have a hearing on Thursday Feb. 22, 2007. The public is invited to attend the hearing at 10am, located at 1 South Van Ness Avenue, on the 7th Floor

Artist SHEPARD FAIREY will have new original art on display and DJ DIABETIC will be on hand spinning records. In addition, comedian DAVID CROSS will MC and also DJ. The Ice Cream Man will be there with free ice cream refreshments, video artists DUBBO will create interactive on-site visuals, and DORKS UNITED will print custom American Apparel shirts and boy shorts for a lucky few…

In case anyone is interested in doing the AIDS ride from SF to LA this summer, there’s a kickoff gathering and info session this Sunday at Hotel Nikko from 11am-4pm. My friends kathryn and arena are going to be training ride leaders this year so it should be fun. If you sign up there, the registration fee is only $55 (instead of $75). I’m going to sign up!

Rick Prelinger is showing rare early video footage of San Francisco on Wednesday!
Film is much more than entertainment—it’s rich and often vivid evidence that backs up imperfect memories and infuses institutional histories with traces of everyday life. Drawing from the Bert Gould collection of silent and early sound films, the Vista collection of exuberant early-1960s city views, diverse home movies and industrial films, this program will include rarely-seen views of San Francisco, contextualizing them in time and space. We hope for audience participation, especially to help identify mystery scenes!
The exhibit is showing at CounterPULSE on Wednesday at 8pm. Let’s go!

Dave Eggers and Valentino Achak Deng are going to be at Herbst Theatre next month! (Dec 11 at 8 pm)
Eggers’ new book What is the What is based on the true story of Valentino Achak Deng, a survivor of a 1000-mile exodus in Sudan. I haven’t read the book yet, but rajbot has and apparently thinks it’s really good so I’m going to read it :-)
