Printing with the Canon PIXMA iP6700D, CUPS, and Fedora

This might save someone some time and hassle. Recently, I needed to print on a friend’s Canon PIXMA iP6700D printer from my Fedora 7 laptop. Turns out that the default drivers used in this setup print blank sheets and useless micro images rather than anything useful.

Looking around for help resulted in some pointers to this Canon FTP site, but it never responded. Digging a little further turned up this useful page, mostly in Japanese, but if (like me) you don’t read Japanese, you can find the files you need by searching the page for the file sizes. The two files that you need for the iP6700D are:

cnijfilter-common-2.60-3.i386.rpm

which you can find by searching the page for “24,410 byte”, and

cnijfilter-ip6600d-2.60-4.i386.rpm

which you can find by searching the page for “2,054,347 byte“.

Download these two files, install them as root with ‘rpm -ivh cnijfilter-common-2.60-3.i386.rpm cnijfilter-ip6600d-2.60-4.i386.rpm’, and you should be able to find the new driver in the GUI printer config tool, system-config-printer.

Incidentally, it looks like the source RPMs are there too. Pretty cool!

Liveblogging an Ubuntu 7.10 installation

Photo_102.jpg

Bob, Shag and I are trying to move our book scanning hardware to Ubuntu 7.10 – the Gutsy Gibbon. It’s a ridiculous process, and our hardware is crap. Here are some notes:

  • chai:20 (4:20) – Started up the installer app on the live cd. Unfortuantely the screen rez is 800×600, so we can’t see the important back/next/ok buttons on the bottom of the installer panel. What kind of installer requires greater than 800×600 screen rez?
  • chai:23 – Somehow, by logging the Live CD user out and fucking with the screen rez, we got the screen to display a larger screen res, but we can’t see the entire desktop on our screen. Moving the mouse around seems to pan the desktop, which would kinda work, if we could see the mouse cursor.
  • chai:25 – We are asked for the timezone, and San Francisco isn’t one of the available options. Los Angeles is. However, we opt to move to La Paz.
  • chai:30 – It is now officially time for chai.
  • chai:40 – We have found that starting a lot of xeyes processes lets us estimate where the invisible mouse cursor should be. There are fifty eyeballs on our screen
  • chai:45 – Bob starts playing minesweeper
  • chai:48 – Someone figures out that this version of xeyes lets us resize the window, so there is a GIANT EYEBALL staring at me
  • chai:50 – Installation done, rebooting!
  • Mouse works after reboot! Now to try and scan books!

Why TR needs a dope instructional dance video

So…I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that I’ve spent untold hours watching all manner of people and cartoon characters doing the Soulja Boy dance on YouTube…but not so embarrassed that I’m not gonna post them all here. This one’s my favorite!

For those who aren’t required to immerse themselves in Top 40 music for work, Soulja Boy’s song has been #1 on Billboard for the last 3 months and counting. Yes, I’m embarrassed that I know this stuff…but whatever, I remember hearing it before he got signed and thinking, OMG this song sucks donkey balls. Obviously, I’m an idiot. Of course, everyone now knows that it was his brilliant instructional dance video that separated his from all other donkey balls songs out there…because it spawned such fabulous renditions like the Soulja Boy…

you get the idea…

Anyways, this is just my roundabout way of saying that The San Francisco Hip Hop Dancefest is happening next month, and I think we should go!

Zooming Out

This map shows the number of inhabitants per doctor in different parts of the world. In Cuba, the ratio is 170 to 1 and in certain parts of Africa, the ratio is 50,000 to 1.You can see a larger map here.

Zara, Ultimate Dog

I’ve been teaching Zara how to catch the Ultimate disc.. she’s getting really good, even though the disc is three times larger than her head! Here are some videos of Zara playing catch on top of Bernal hill:

Here is an earlier video of Zara learning how to catch a floppy puppy disc.

Meet Kindred!

We’re dog-sitting Kindred this weekend.. When Julij brought him over, I commented how Zara and Kindred hadn’t yet clicked as dog friends. Yeah, that lasted for about five minutes. They only stop playing for disco naps, and then they wake up and are at it again. Here’s some video of our tired but happy doggies:

“The System” … 2007

After 9 months of putting it off, I’m creating new folders and filing everything I have in my “To Be Filed” inbox …. I don’t know what happened but … 9 months … geez.

Here’s a little tip when real life presents a bulk-insert task like this … when you’re trying to find something it really helps to have the papers sorted chronologically. On the other hand you know that you will probably never look at these statements and receipts again … this is a good case for using Lazy Evaluation. I just dump everything in the proper category (e.g. Bank Statements, 2007) and then don’t order them chronologically until I actually have to find something like a specific charge on an old credit card statement.

Sound, Light, Sand

Check out this awesome art piece being created right now right next to my sister’s room at her new residence in Rome, an artist/loft studio. It’s like the Ranch except cleaner.

Rome is a interesting mix of provincial, urban, snobby, boring, emotional … and of course, the Roman Ruins. More later.

ok, the embedded video isn’t working, hopefully rajbot can fix it :-) … here is a link

Update: I added the video!

Unfortunately, archive.org doesn’t provide a cut-and-paste blob that works with wordpress. You have to manually remove newlines, add autoPlay:false and maybe autoBuffering:false, and add urls to the playlist yourself. ugh.

I’ll work on making a webapp to automate this process..

I tried to add this as a comment, but WP throws an error that says ‘Can not open socket’. I wonder if that is a captcha plugin issue. I’ll look into it later! -rajbot
