ZeroOne in San Jose

zero1.jpg
ZeroOne is an international art & technology festival that’s happening in San Jose this week so my office is taking the day off tomorrow to check it out! Since I was enlisted to organize the day out, I thought I’d post some of the things I culled over here too (these are sort of biased towards location based, sound, and telephony projects, cause well, that’s what we do at work. But there are lots of other neat projects to check out!)

At the San Jose Museum of Art as part of the Edge Conditions exhibition

  • Listening Post
is an “art installation that culls text fragments in real time from thousands of unrestricted Internet chat rooms, bulletin boards and other public forums. The texts are read (or sung) by a voice synthesizer, and simultaneously displayed across a suspended grid of more than two hundred small electronic screens.” Sort of like We Feel Fine but amplified!

At the South Hall behind the Convention Center…

  • Apocrypha
is a satirical work where you can contact a colony of prehistorical archaebacteria (the oracle) from your cell phone and ask it questions. The stimuli of your text or voice message will elicit a chemical response from the colony which is then translated into text you can apply to your everyday life. I guess this beats asking Dr. Phil.
  • Ethermapping
explores the unseen electromagnetic dimensions of the landscape through an interactive map representing every radio transmitter in Auckland city, New Zealand, and the transmissions that come from those points…broadcasting, cellular phones, wireless internet, civil defence, maritime safety, ambulance services, and a huge range of licensed communications by industries like construction, transport, oil, and broadcasting.”
  • Cellphonia
is a collaborative opera about San Jose with lyrics taken from the San Jose Mercury News. You can participate by dialing the number on the website and choosing the part you want to sing. The system then feeds lyrics to your phone and after each section there’s a karaoke style cue for you to sing. The opera will be played at the entrance of the South Hall addition of the Convention Center. It’s cacaphonous!
  • San Jose Voices
Daniel Jolliffe will be broadcasting your voice messages from his bicycle-driven mobile sculpture all week. You can send messages his way by dialing the number on his site!
  • Ho Fatso
    yay! wrestling!

Also, not related to ZeroOne, but I’d be remiss as the resident tikirobot pevert if I didn’t point you to these…blinky lights! (okay, they don’t blink, but it would be cool if they did, no?)

also, if you can make a day of it, the ZeroOne exhibits pass is a sweet deal! $20 gets you into all the ISEA Exhibits, The Tech Museum, and the San Jose Museum of Art.
