APE
so if you’re at all a fan of illustration and independent comix get yourself over to APE – NOW!! (well, okay, not now, but at least tomorrow) I went today and saw so much fun stuff! books, t-shirts, toys, prints, original artwork and more. You’ll find a lot of hand stitched, hand stapled labors of love, drawn in the wee hours of the night, not likely to be found in bookstores anywhere. And the best part of course is talking to the artists and showing them you support their work.
Here’s a fab print I picked up from Joshua Ellingson today (I like to think it’s called Fluffy Licked the Stickers but I don’t think that’s what it’s called)

and one from my friend Huan who also has a new line of plushy toys out called The Phobiaz. go! go! go!

Note to self: When flying through the Evil Gigantic Bunny quadrant, use the Space Artichoke and not the UltraCarrot 3000!

You guys know what this means right? A lobster screening at my place! (that is, if you don’t mind watching on my wee 13″ tv…or maybe I can borrow a projector from someone). sometime next week? Fri / Sat / Sun nt?

New Slide Player for Mac!

Yup yup…you heard it hear first folks cuz nobody else even knows about it. Slide Player for Mac now puts more bling in your bling with:
- iChat
When a image slides by, click “Share” to bring up a window with your iChat buddy list (iChat must be running for this to work). - Copy/Paste
You can now copy and paste and drag and drop the images from the ticker. - Resizable
Make the ticker HUGE if you want! - Best.Upload.Experience.Ever
OK, maybe not quite yet. But that is the goal. And the new Upload Window is a huge improvement over the gray Sheet we used to have. We need your feedback to get this upload part right. - Stuff
There is a lot of stuff on there on the internet. If it has RSS and pictures, it probably works with Slide.
Oh, and I hear there is a Windows Player as well, if you need that.
My favorite Slide Feed is Cute Overload. What’s yours?
Link to download Slide Player (which does not require registration, but it’s more fun that way)

neat! I want an etsy feed! http://etsy.com/ although, I may have to use the windows player for now since it’s been determined that my Mac doesn’t want to play with others (something to do with a malfunctioning airport card apparently!)

Wow, it’s very slick!! I love the animation between the horizontal and vertical modes.. and the ability to live-resize! And ICHAT!!! That is so awesome!
I have some feature requests!
- When I iChat a photo, make it insert the pic instead of just a link. DO IT!
- When I click and drag my mouse within the ticker, I would like it to manually scrub back and forth.
- Can you make the pictures go across the bottom of my screen, and then up the left side? How about all round the edges, leaving just a hole in the middle for a terminal window?
- Text ticker!
- Also, I’m hungry but it’s too cold to get out of bed! Can you bring me something from moonlight on your way to work? -
rajbot
Oh yeah, Cute Overload and Great Shots from Flickr are the ones I watch. Can you make it upload to my flickr account as well? DO IT!
-
rajbot
Oh yeah, I tried to make an etsy feed, but their RSS contains no pictures. LAME!

Tixe!
The framework formerly known as BionicDOM is now Tixe! Jim writes:
Tixe is a Mac OS X framework that brings the power of Cocoa bindings to Apple’s WebKit.
Access and edit document content, styles, node attributes, and markup… even bind Cocoa controls to JavaScript values. And it all runs live inside of Interface Builder.
If you use CSS in your life or want to check out the strange and wonderful world of Cocoa Bindings, you should definitely check this out.

Arthur C. Clarke, Buddhist monks, and the Best T-Shirt EVER!
BB points to this news story that has Arthur C. Clarke battling Buddhist monks over daylight savings time. It also shows Clarke wearing a tshirt that says “I INVENTED THE SATELLITE AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT!” I don’t know what to say. Here is Clarke’s paper on geosynchronous satellites.

who gave him the t-shirt? I am inclined to believe he may have bought it himself!

Alternative Press Expo
one of my favorite annual events is happening this weekend! It’s the alternative press expo where independent comic artists from all over gather to display their wares!

Count me in! I’ll be in SF on Sat/Sun for the AERA conference (hint, hint – anyone interested in hearing the latest Education Research;-). I’m down for finding out who might have picked up the Meridian, et al series. I heard Disney bought them out, but I refuse to believe! I might not be able to go until after 3, though.

I totally didn’t understand that Tom Is Not My Friend shirt, so I had to google it. Apparently it’s a myspace thing.. Here is an explaination, as well as a Friend of Tom shirt:
Newbie Myspace users are immediately friends with Tom, whether they like it or not. He doesn’t ask to be friends, he just asserts himself and gets right in there. Tom is just that kind of guy, he assumes you are into him. Sorry Tom, I got enough friends…
I can’t believe MySpace users would pay $18 for a Tom Tshirt. I have a silkscreen.. we totally need to milk this.. If only we knew more about myspace…

yeah, I’m pretty embarrassed that any of this occupies any part of my brain. sigh.

Hurry! Only one day left to register!
That’s right. If your register by tomorrow, you can be a master of MS Word, or concealed weapons! Or both!
The thing about the midwest is that it’s so hard to make fun of, because this kind of thing would just seem silly if it weren’t true. This is a sign outside a vocational school near where I grew up. Of course, the small coffee shop near where I live in LA with a valet stand would be far stranger here. Growing up in one place and living in another, they both seem weird, but at the same time they both kind of make sense. I wonder if that class includes throwing stars?

heh, I wonder what the class description for “concealed weapons” is!

its a secret!

More on “Muhammadanism”

Heh.. I didn’t notice before that this book is a “Harper’s Stereotype Edition”! Apparently this book caused enough of a controversy that the State Department had to issue a statement. Read the whole stereotypical thing here.

Bush on Mohammed II
Remember this guy? It turns out the Rev. George Bush A.M. is, in fact, a distant relative of the current president. Apparently he was a biblical scholar in the 1800′s, and a Presbytarian until he was kicked out for being too ‘liberal’ and ‘progressive,’ according to this wikipedia article. Here’s another online version of the previously mentioned book.

Pancake Robot

The last few weekends I’ve been waking up and thinking “man, I wish I had a pancake robot.”
I’m not sure how this robot would look, but I am sure about the user interface…press a button, five minutes later: pancakes. Then dump a few of the robot parts into the dishwasher (that part is important. I don’t want to be cleaning up a bunch of stuff on my weekend). Ideally the pancake robot would be hooked up the the water system and also our municipal supply of pancake mix. Syrup and butter I would do myself….I guess I’m old fashioned that way.

this would be great…until of course the impending robot uprising

I wrote etsy an email yesterday asking if they’d include images in their RSS feed and they said they couldn’t…maybe that was a blessing in disguise.
