Obey

new world odor
Shepard Fairey (the man behind Obey Giant among other neat things), is having a one man show at the White Walls gallery starting tomorrow night through the end of the month. I sometimes think it’s kind of weird to look at street art in the context of an art gallery, but there will be new stuff so it should be interesting!

Save Fires on Ocean Beach!

They say:

We believe that fires on Ocean Beach are an essential part of San Francisco’s culture!

I couldn’t agree more. These guys have set up a form that makes it really easy to send a letter…so go do it!

reverse-menu-complete in bash

Shag helped me add reverse-menu-complete to my bash setup. It’s really easy, but undocumented. To get shift-TAB to menu-complete backwards, add the following line to your .inputrc:
\C-y:"\M--\C-i"

The \M-- is actually a -1 argument to menu-complete (aka TAB, aka Ctrl-I). The info for Readline arguments describes how to pass numeric args to readline commands.

Reverse-menu-complete is useful to me since I have a FingerWorks keyboard with gestures for tab and shift-tab. The gesture stuff saves a ton of typing, which is good if you have RSI.

Here is my full .inputrc:
\C-y:"\M--\C-i"
TAB: menu-complete
set completion-ignore-case On

My favorite almost naked animal

“There’s not much here besides animals wearing underpants.”
(okay, it’s my second favorite almost naked animal.)

Numark iDJ2 has pitch control!

This is so great! Our project to do the same thing was going nowhere. Looks like they are using the iPod just as a hard drive, which is probably the only was to get pitch control short of running your own firmware.

At the Fudge Factory

detail of my inner ear

There are some wicked new drawings up at fudge factory comics. Check out these cross sections!

Cross Section of Los Angeles Air Outside My Kitchen Window
Magnified Detail of My Mustache
Detail of My Stomach Lining
Detail of My Inner Ear

I’m pretty sure a cross section of my now-dead-laptop keyboard would likely reveal cause of death.

Tablatronix

You have to check out this *crazzzy* video (direct link) of a tabla machine that decides to abandon its roots and move to the big city, only to get involved with the seedy glitch-tech scene. His parents must be so disappointed!

Mars and Venus, coding together forever

Overheard today on iChat:

rajbot: rants about the how scripting languages don’t have lexical scope
jess: “we should make a language called cupcake !
rajbot: “would it have block-level scoping?”
jess: “it would have frosting ! “

The Official TikiRobot Drinking Game

attention & sex

um well, no, this post isn’t about sex…sorry to disappoint. It’s the title of an essay by Scott Berkun that I thought was pretty well put.

The wise and happy throughout history have found ways to avoid situations that demand divided attention. They convert the fractured experience into the meaningful (and perhaps magical) by investing their attention wisely.

There isn’t a single great work in the history of civilization, no novel, symphony, film, or song that was completed as a 1/5th time-slice between e-mail, IM, cellphones and television. Despite the modern drive to consume things made by others, time will always be our most finite resource and it crumbles when split into tiny little pieces.

So true. Anything I’ve made that I feel happy with required me to really focus. In some ways I sort of miss the days before DSL and high speed connections…when it was actually painfully slow to surf the web. I don’t think I had ADD issues then! (I know I know…can’t blame technology…must blame miserable lack of willpower…and who knows, I’m sure some new genre / art form will emerge from all these 1/5 time slices)

sCrAmBlEd?HaCkZ! Video

Every so often a project comes along where you say “Wow. That is awesome. I could have done that. When I quit my job and was bumming around doing nothing I could have made the world a better place and created a project that pushes the envelope of software, art and civil society.”

Today we honor Sven and his sCrAmBlEd?HaCkZ! project. Word up, Sven. This is great stuff.

Seven Up / 7 Plus Seven

Jess and I have been watching this totally fantastic series of documentaries called The UP Series. It starts in 1963 by filming fourteen British 7-year-olds from various backgrounds. They then follow up with a new documentary every seven years. Serious dedication!

I put the series on our netflix queue sometime last year, and we just now finished watching 42 UP. It’s absolutely mesmerizing.. you get to watch 14 very different kids all grow up and become very different people. After 7 UP you think you have it all figured out, but then life gets weird..

42 UP was filmed in 1998, and I was sad that they didn’t follow up with 49 UP, which was supposed to be filmed last year. I just found out that they *did* film it, but it’s not on dvd yet! I can’t wait!!!!!

Everyone should watch this series so we can all watch 49 UP together when it comes out!

Add the UP Series to your netflix queue, or buy the box set!
