I’ve been getting everyone to help me with the Shapeoko CNC mill that I’ve been putting together. Ravi loves using the arrow keys to draw with a Sharpie zip tied to the spindle mount. My dad has been helping me figure out how to keep the stepper drivers from overheating. Wholesome CNC family fun!

E-biking to the top of Bernal Hill
Shag convinced me to get an e-bike. It is the total opposite of my other bike.. it’s an electric, step-through, made of steel, quite heavy, with fenders and chainguards and a kickstand. But like my other bike, it is pretty magical…

The Curisosity Rover Pixel Art Logo
The Curiosity Rover sent out this tweet this morning:
Heads up! No, really. My head’s up. Mast deploy successful. I’m looking around, taking Navcam images #MSL
It included this image which shows a cool pixel art logo on the front bumper (Update: it is an AR tag that can be used in the future with smart phones to obtain more information about the mission):

Here is a reproduction of the pixel art logo:

I created it using this script:

Shapeoko parts list
I ordered a Shapeoko CNC mechanical kit from Inventables, but still need to order the remaining parts. The purchasing page is a good starting place and lists a bunch of options. Here is what I think I need to order (already have the arduino an dremel):
Synthetos order:
- Synthetos grblShield with Shapeoko mod – there are a bunch of arduino shields available for driving stepper motors, but this is the one that will ship with the full inventables kit, so I’ll just go with that. Also, this shield includes stepper drivers. $69.99
- Synthetos heat sinks for stepper drivers – $6.99
- shipping: $5.35 for a double order
Sparkfun order:
- NEMA 17 Stepper Motors – $16.95 * 3
- shipping: $14.68 UPS ground for a double order (6 motors)
Jameco order:
- 24V 4.5A power supply – $29.95
- shipping: $7.56 for two
- tax: $4.34 for two

Configuring a Time Capsule as a wireless router with a Comcast cable modem.
Unfortunately, sometimes Comcast is your only internet option. And sometimes you want to configure a Time Capsule as a wireless router for your parents, who happen to have Comcast. So you plug in the Time Capsule, configure it using Airport Utility, and it doesn’t work.
Well, that is no surprise, because you have Comcast, the worst internet provider on the planet. You would think you could just plug in a new device into a comcast cable modem, but you would be wrong. So you follow these instructions to Get Apple Time Capsule to work with Comcast.
Apparently that is all it takes for most people. But after I followed those steps, the Time Capsule could connect to your Comcast cable modem, but when I tried to use the Time Capsule as a wifi access point, I discovered that something was still borked. I couldn’t load any web page, DNS fails, you can’t ping any IP address, etc.
Here is how I got a Time Capsule configured with Comcast.
1. Follow those Get Apple Time Capsule to work with Comcast steps from above.
2. Now, with your Time Capsule connected to your cable modem with an ethernet cable, you open up Airport Utility and see something like the screen shot below. There is a little green dot next to your Time Capsule, but a orange dot next to the Internet icon, and clicking on the Internet icon says “Disconnected”.
3. I don’t know why, but my Time Capsule started up configured in Bridge mode. We need to change it to DHCP+NAT mode. In Airport Utility, click on the Time Capsule icon, and choose Edit (see the bottom arrow in the screen shot above.
4. Choose the Network tab, as shown below. Change from Bridge mode to DHCP and NAT mode.
5. Click the Network Options… button at the bottom to set your IPv4 range. I changed it from 10.10 (the default) to 192.168, as shown below.
Save your settings, and you should be good to go!

Depixelizing Pixel Art
Tymm pointed me to this Microsoft Research paper on Depixelizing Pixel Art:
Naïve upsampling of pixel art images leads to unsatisfactory results. Our algorithm extracts a smooth, resolution-independent vector representation from the image which is suitable for high-resolution display devices.
There are a bunch of sample images here. Check out the upscaled Bowser:

Ready Player One Easter Egg
I read Ready Player One a few months ago based on Aaron’s suggestion. It’s Ernest Cline’s first novel, and is a fun read. If you grew up playing video games in the 80s, then you’ll absolutely love this book, because it is full of an insane number of references to old video games and nerdy 80s culture.Yesterday, the author announced that the book contains an Easter Egg which leads you to the first of three video game challenges, similar to the challenges in the plot of the book. And the first challenge is a ROM that you can download and play on an Atari 2600. And the prize is a DeLorean!
I totally missed the easter egg, which is hidden somewhere in the novel. Maybe because I read the whole thing in two sittings over a single weekend. Actually, no one found the easter egg until after Cline announced it, 10 months after the book was published.
Now, however, several people have made it to the second gate!
I guess I should hurry up and re-read the book and try to find the first gate. The second challenge becomes available on July 1, and the third gate opens a month after that. The amount of work that went into the easter egg is quite impressive!

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response
From http://www.reddit.com/r/asmr:
Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a physical sensation characterized by a pleasurable tingling that typically begins in the head and scalp, and often moves down the spine and through the limbs.
There is no sure-fire trigger for ASMR, and not everyone experiences it. But this video of scratchy writing with fountain pen is a good start (ignore the Ayn Randiness):
TheWhiteRabbitASMR makes videos intentionally designed to trigger ASMR. Listen to her whisper while she gives you an eye exam:
